Projects: Surgical Trips

In the past we have worked in the hospital in Antigua, however, many of our patients live far away from this location and the long journey to reach it is an insurmountable barrier for them. Although we continue to send patients to this excellent facility, Project HANDS has moved its focus into bringing the surgery to the patients.

By moving into the rural areas, we can treat patients closer to their communities. This makes the surgeries more accessible to those who are afraid of leaving their family and friends and lessens the trauma of such an event.

Our surgical teams vary according to the facilities where they are working. They usually consist of 10-30 people and are made up of doctors, nurses, technicians and non-medical personnel. Trips may be one or two weeks, and teams perform elective surgeries in such areas as gynecology, general and reconstructive surgery.

Currently we perform surgery in two locations - the newer and elegant Centro de Salud Barbara, and the more rustic Proyecto Salud y Paz clinic near Chichicastenango

Volunteering with a surgical team is a particularly rewarding experience as not only do the surgeries relieve years of needless suffering but they also make a lasting impact (read Teodoro's Story and Arturo's Story).

All participants pay their own travel and accommodation costs for these surgical trips. Project HANDS fundraises a further $12,000 to $15,000 required to pay for all the medical and supplies, medications and local costs.
