Projects: Who We Help

Most Guatemalan Maya live in rural areas miles from any social structure or support. Their lives are simple. Families of 8 or more live in one-room shacks. Nutrition is based on an unbalanced diet of maize and beans. Many men work as field laborers earning less than $2 a day.

Life is difficult. But they are a strong people who have survived for centuries and overcome challenges we cannot imagine. They are shy yet welcoming, warm and keen, and it is a pleasure to give to them, for they give so much back.

Our projects are aimed at improving the quality of rural Mayan life by providing healthcare, education and family support.

Because the Maya have little or no access to medical care (see Guatemala), we send medical teams to run outreach clinics, and surgical teams to perform elective surgery.

As an extension to our idea of bringing surgery to the patients, we are working on a long term project to build a small surgical facility or hospitalito in a rural area.

In addition to our medical projects, we have started an educational sponsorship program to help Mayan girls and women who wish to continue their education.

We also provide support to families in need, be it by providing materials to construct houses or supplying food when they have no money and there is no work.
