Triage Trip: October 08 - 17, 2010

Location
Rural areas of Guatemala where we run outreach clinics.

Trip Description
The primary objective is to find surgical candidates who are then scheduled for surgery with either the next Project HANDS surgical team or other volunteer surgical teams. Patients with non-surgical conditions are offered primary care treatment where possible.

Most of our patients are Mayan and from the poorest segment of society who have little access to medical care. For these trips we work closely with our affiliate Partner for Surgery who organizes all the ground logistics and local staff.

Team Composition
   •   2-3 physicians (if possible with pediatric, gyne or general practice experience)
   •   1-2 nurses who can work in the capacity of nurse practitioners and are
comfortable undertaking preliminary triage and basic primary care
   •   Spanish/English translator
   •   An experienced non-medical person to oversee pharmacy and
        other back up services

Recruiting Status
Recruiting Commences April 2010

Participant Cost

Participants pay for their own air fare, accommodation and most meals.

Project HANDS raises an additional $5,000 required for the trip. This helps pay for:

   •    patient food and transportation costs, bloodwork, X-rays
   •    contingency for items such as patient food packages, additional medications
